Ty Pennington's favorite tool is a camera

VENICE BEACH, Calif. – Home makeover king Ty Pennington, who co-hosts the new TNT cooking competition On the Menu, had us over to his home recently to show off his home menu. What's there? Lots of analog products for a digital guy.
His living room is full of collectibles – turntables, old audio receivers, guitars, a stand-up bass and mandolins and banjos, along with multiple digital cameras from point and shoots to top of the line DSLRs.
HOME STUFF
"People ask me what my favorite tool is, and I'm like it's not a hammer or a drill, it's a camera.
I shoot everything, I document everything. We've all become human selfie machines!"
The former host of Extreme Makeoverand Trading Spaces uses the camera to capture what he sees, everything from hotel lobbies to even a sewer in Norway, which turned into a pattern for fabric. He shoots photos on an iPhone, but for the important stuff, he prefers the compact Canon PowerShot G16 and the bigger $3,500 Canon 5D Mark III DSLR, because he likes to crop the images into wallpaper patterns.
A recent safari excursion in Africa brought him up close and personal with a local giraffe.
"It's a design tip I give to a lot of people, what can they do to their home that makes a difference? Well, how many photos do you take a day? Print some out, put them on your wall so it doesn't look like everyone else's house."
MANCAVE
As part of our visit, Pennington took us into his "mancave," his detached garage, which is filled to the brim with old guitars, drums, keyboards and old amps. This is where he hides out to decompress.
"Honestly the way music has become I think there's things about the old world you can use in the new world. It's just about making sure you're not sticking with one or the other. We complicate everything by over-thinking and overworking and sometimes digitally that's true as well. I love playing with toys. I have a percussion machine, something you can't download off the Internet. just these random pings some machine makes.

When traveling, he also has the camera at his side, to shoot videos to run on hisTypennington.com website, where's he posted tours of everything from the hot spots in his Venice Beach neighborhood, to visits to remote spots like his recent trip to Norway.
"It's fun to get your own take on where you live, what the cool spots I think are."
